Goals

One of the characteristics of very successful people is that they have good goals, that are written down.

Your goal is very personal.  It needs to be what YOU REALLY, REALLY WANT! Bill Gove, the Frank Sinatra of public speakers, said “If I want to be free, I have to be ME. Not the Me I think you think I should be. Not the Me I think my spouse thinks I should be. Not the Me I think my Kids think I should be. If I want to be FREE, I’ve gotta be ME. “

Goal Types

Now let’s talk about goal types.  There are three types of goals: A, B, and C.

A Goal

Most people are playing with A or B goals. An A goal is something you’ve done before. You already know how to do it. For instance, you’re going to buy a new car, but you’ve already bought a new car before, maybe even the same make and model. Or maybe you’re going to buy a house, pretty much like what you have, or maybe a little bit more. You’ve done it before. It could even be starting a business. You could have started a business, it might have been successful, and now you’re going to start another business just about the same. It’s an A-type goal. There’s no inspiration in that, and most importantly there’s no growth. In order to produce better results for yourself you are going to have to grow, and to grow you’re going to have to change. If you want your results to change, you will have to change to support it. You will have to break out of the current model. An A type goal does not support this change.

A Goal

A B-type goal is the trap. It’s a goal where you think you can do it. You really feel like you’re into your big goal, into your C-type goal, because it feels like you have to stretch. You’re crunching the numbers, and thinking if I move this and I do that, and I move this around just a little bit, then I could do this! But it’s a trap! Because you’re still confining yourself to what you know to some degree. And so, you’re not really going to grow. You might grow a little bit, but you’re not going to grow a lot. And, you’re not going to have the inspiration you need for when the going gets tough. Because you don’t really love this goal anyway. And so you will find it easy to say “forget it” and give up. And, you’re not going to have any support, because when you go up to a B type goal, your friends, your colleagues, your family – you’re leaving them. You don’t mean to be leaving them, but you’re always in harmony with the people you’re spending time with.  Now you’re saying “I’m going to stretch.” And so you’re shifting your vibration. You’re not going to be in harmony with where they are, so you’re essentially leaving them. And they’re going to be mad at you, most likely! Or they’re going to be afraid for you. Or they’re just not going to understand what you’re doing and feel left out. And so they’re not going to support you, even as much as they want to. And so, you get in this trap and go right back to the A goal, and just stay there. The results are the same.  No growth. No change.

C Goal
B Goal
A Goal

Look at the space above the A and B goals. This space represents the C goal area. This is where your Soup of Possibilies is waiting for you.  Whatever your heart desires is up here just waiting for you. It’s waiting for you!  Your own personal Soup of Possibilies!   What you really have to do is name it, and claim it. Whatever it is that your heart desires, stand up right now, while holding your idea in mind, throw your arms in the air and yell “I CLAIM IT!!!” Doesn’t that feel good? Whatever your heart desires, it is waiting for you! You must claim it! And that requires you to stretch. That requires you to create a goal that in your mind is a huge stretch.  It doesn’t matter what someone else says or thinks about it.  If they think “yeah, you can do it, of course you can do that it’s not a stretch” but in your mind it’s a huge stretch, then you’re on to something. Because in your own mind, never mind what someone else says, the goal seems impossible to you. When you feel that stretch, when you feel uncomfortable, rejoice and say to yourself “I am onto something!” When it starts to feel uncomfortable and you want to push back, that’s when you have a BIG goal.  Go for it with gusto!

Goal Creation Exercise

Here’s an exercise you can use to develop your goal:

1. Get relaxed. Close your eyes, put all thoughts out of your mind. Focus on your breathing. In. Out. In. Out.

2. Now, imagine that you have a billion dollars. A Billion Dollars! You can do whatever it is that you want, you have plenty of money to do it. Let that soak in for a minute.  Money is no limitation so you can put money out of your mind.

3. It doesn’t matter what you want, you can have it. You don’t have to worry about how it’s going to happen, that’s not your job – your job is to build the dream. Trying to decide how it’s going to happen will limit or destroy the dream. Suspend your disbelief, know that there is a lawful process providing for the dream – you don’t have to know where it’s coming from or how it’s gonig to happen, you just need to know that it’s going to come.  Relax, and ALLOW!

4. Now, imagine your life, what is it that you want? Is it something you want to be doing? Is it something you want to have? Is it something or someone you want to be? What does that feel like? Where do you live?  Describe it! What is your home like? Describe it in full detail!  What are you doing? Describe who you are now. What are you contributing, and how are you contributing it? Spend a few minutes imagining what that is like.

5. Now write that down, in as much detail as you can. Write it in the present tense, as if it is already your life. If you need, write down the main points, and fill in the details later.

6. Now, pick the most important item from your dream – the one that gives you the most joy – and goosebumps. The one that brings tears to your eyes because you are so grateful that it has come to fruition.  Write that down on your goal card IN INK in the present tense – I am so happy and grateful now that _____ and put the date when this goal will be achieved.  Why ink?  Because pencil is too easy to change – there’s no commitment.

7. Keep the goal card where you will touch it several times a day – in a pocket, attached to your phone, or something like that. Make a habit of saying your goal to yourself every time you touch it.  Read it to yourself at least twice a day, preferably several times a day.
